Toby's dream is to be the fastest marathon runner with incurable cancer
Toby, is 27 and living with multiple myeloma.
It was 2021, and in his last year of an undergraduate degree, Toby began feeling sick, lethargic, and breathless. A scan revealed a massive plasmacytoma, a tumour comprising plasma cells of bony or soft tissue. After radiation therapy, Toby relapsed which then led to a diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma.
In 2022 he underwent an autologous stem cell transplant, but the outlook was not good. Toby said when he had the transplant, he was told his prognosis was about 3 years. There was however a new treatment he could try but it was only available in Australia.
“It was so hard to leave my family and friends, but I was keen to live a bit longer, so the move was really my only option” explained Toby.
On August 30, 2026 Toby will take part in the TCS Sydney Marathon , and he hopes to run it in under 3hrs. After a lot of determined campaigning, we have Guinness World Records on hand to take note of his efforts.
“I hope to do this to inspire others on treatment that there is cool stuff you can do after/on treatment to get through tough times” said Toby.
Running has become a huge part of his strength and focus, and he’s training every day with incredible determination, not just chasing a dream but also showing what’s possible while living with cancer. The Dream Team are now fully on board as #1 cheer squad - we can't wait to hear how he gets on on Sunday!
